Lawton Public Library to hold series of events to help residents get jobs

Lawton Public Library will play host to classes this week keyed toward helping residents get jobs.

A session on expunging criminal records is set from 5-6 p.m. Monday at the library, 110 SW 4th. It will be presented by attorney Michael Wilson with Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma. Officials said individuals with a misdemeanor or non-violent felony conviction that is at least 10 years old are generally eligible for expungement.

“Expungements have a huge impact on personal lives,” said Library Director Kristin Herr. Library officials said the workshop will provide the steps necessary for expungement and the session is open to anyone. Further resources are available to those who qualify.

The library also will host a Resume Writing & More class from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 24. The session is designed to equip job seekers with the skills to craft compelling resumes. Participants will have the opportunity to learn to write different styles of basic resumes, when to use each style, and what not to put on them.

The workshop will be taught by Julia Shroll, career coordinator with Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, and is open to all job seekers, regardless of experience level.

Both sessions will tie into the 2024 Community Hiring Event, set from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Lawton Farmers Market, 77 SW 4th. Those seeking jobs should come ready for an interview and bring their resume because employers will be on site, library officials said. The event is open to veterans beginning at 9:30 a.m.
