The Oklahoma Historical Society awarded the Oklahoma Heritage Preservation Grant to the Lawton Public Library.
According to a press release, the library received $20,000 for a project facilitating the digitization and hosting of 150 rolls of microfilm on the publicly accessible website, “The Gateway to Oklahoma History.” The collection will include back issues from The Lawton Constitution from 1983-1985 and The Lawton Morning Press from 1964-1973, providing valuable historical resources to researchers and the public.
Kristin Herr, library director, said the library is very pleased to receive this grant.
“We can digitize the old newspapers and make them available for our community,” Herr said. “Researchers, genealogists and local historians will have access like never before! This is only possible due to OHS funding.”
The release said the OHS will distribute over $520,000 in grant funds, with projects ranging from collections care and strategic planning to exhibit development and educational programming.
