City Council meetings start times might be returning to early evening.
The City Council will consider a proposal Tuesday from Mayor Stan Booker and Ward 8 Councilman/Mayor Pro Tem Randy Warren to move the council’s regular meetings to 6 p.m. That proposal would restore the start time that had been used for regular meetings until 2020, when the council moved the time to 2 p.m.
The initial change was made to better accommodate the schedules of council members and city staff, with city administrators arguing at the time that staff members would have considerably shorter hours on council Tuesday’s if meetings started during the work day, rather than an hour after the work day ended. City administrators said the change was possible because council meetings are live-streamed, meaning residents can watch live or recorded versions without attending in person.
But since the change, “there has been ongoing feedback from the community regarding the accessibility and convenience of the meeting times,” Booker and Warren said in their agenda commentary.
Today’s discussion is expected to center on the benefits and drawbacks of reverting to 6 p.m., with the men saying the proposed change is calculated to “enhance public attendance and participation by scheduling meetings at a time potentially more convenient for residents.”
The agenda item does not say when the new start time would go into effect.
