Lawton Book and Play Review Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the McMahon Foundation, 716 SW C, to hear a review of the book “Teddy and Booker T,” by Brian Kilmeade.
The book focuses on President Theodore Roosevelt, who was white and born into wealth and privilege in New York City, and Booker T. Washington, who was Black and born on a plantation, were instrumental in paving the way for the Civil Rights Movement. According to the New York Times Book Review, the men believed that the American ideals of hard work and individual liberty would lead to success.
The reviewer will be Janice Byrd, of McKinney, Texas, who has been reviewing books since 1984. Each year, she introduces a new book with a dramatic monologue style to many different groups. She incorporates works that include humor, romance, current affairs and journalistic accounts of people and places. Byrd has a bachelor’s degree from Baylor University and a master’s degree in library science from the University of North Texas.
Individuals may attend the review for a fee of $10. Memberships also are available in the club for $30.
