It was standing room only with a roster of 55 bowlers in contention for Po-Boy #6 as the lights came on for another fun filled evening of friendly competition.
Only 16 bowlers advanced to the single elimination bracket with this week’s ‘low to go’ being a score of 429 with handicap after two games of qualifying.
This week’s top seed was Cathy Shuman, posting 484 to lead the clan, bowling 90 plus pins over her average to set the pace.
The remaining field included Shawn Thomas, 481, Dave Yett, 477, Ashlye Workman, 466, Tory Morales, 462, Dennis Langham, 458, Charles Macias, 453, Tony Faustner, 453, Zach Leshikar, 451, Kadeem Smith, 446, Kellan Hill, 438, Nick Macias 435, Steve Seymour, Dawn McCammon and Ja-cob Walker, 432 and Andrew Petering with the lucky last score of 429.
Advancing to the round of eight were Shuman over Petering, 209-164, Faustner over Leshikar, 201-194, Morales over N. Macias, 256-204, Workman over Seymour, 238-179, Yett over McCammon, 218-217, Langham over Hill, 213-199, Smith over C. Macias, 237-189 and Thomas over Walker, 203-199.
High scratch game winners during qualifying games were Zach Leshikar, 236 and Nate Baggett, 220, for game one, and Tory Morales, 256 and Dave Yett, 255, for game two.
The round of eight saw several very close matches. Advancing to the semis was Shuman over Faust-ner, 196-192, Workman over Morales, 197-172, Langham over Yett, 220-210 and Thomas over Smith, 219-212.
Shuman stayed focused and put a 180 scratch/235 with handicap on the board against one of our few two handed female bowlers Workman, who tapped out at 175 for totals.
In the other match, Langham held the handicap advantage and rolled a 170/224 to get the win over Thomas’ 182/193.
Only one pin handicap separated Shuman from Langham so in reality, it was a heads up match for the finals but Shuman’s game wandered while Langham stayed in check and took the title 223-180.
Po-Boy tournaments are held every Monday evening at Thunderbird Lanes. Bowling starts at 7 p.m. Due to the large turnout, please sign up and pay as soon as possible to reserve your spot.
Remember, there are only three Po-Boys left of the series.
League News
Kellan Hill blasted out the one and only 700 series we’ve seen in a while bowling in the Roudy Bunch at Thunderbird Lanes.
Hill found the line early on and rolled a 276 to start his night.
Game two was a respectable 223 and game three was in the zone at 237 to sum up a nice 736 for the week’s high.
Kudos goes to Stephen Pennington who followed Hill for high series, posting a 694 on games of 196, 235 and 263, well above his average of 188.
Due to technical difficulties there were no youth scores for this column. Tune in next week for high-lights from this past Saturday and information on the upcoming fall season.
No-Tap News
Tony Mendoza was the no-tap bowler of the week, posting a 773 in the Tuesday Night Tapless league at Thunderbird Lanes.
After starting with a 221 game, Mendoza went 275 and 277 to make up the set.
Bill Cox rolled 755 for the Socialites No-Tap high set, followed by Teri Jester who started the day with an 11 in a row, 290, to assist in her 750 for totals.
And taking the crown in the Senior No-Tap Colorama event at Thunderbird last Friday afternoon was Steve Jester with an 898 including handicap.
Jester had scratch games of 223, 300 and 273 for a 796 series that was also a first place in the Scratch Singles event.
As a side note, Gene Augustine III also posted a no-tap 300 game but that was his only claim to fame for the day.
Cleo Travis won second place for an 839, Steve Lindsay came in third with a 793 and JP Nauman took fourth with a 788.
Finishing up the Scratch Singles results were Lindsay in second with 778, Nauman in third with 710 and Sam Bowman in fourth with 694.
Bonnie Ledford made it to the top with a first place finish in the women’s division with a 790 series that included scratch games of 208, 172 and 191.
Defending champ Sue Avis dropped to second this week with a 745.
Mystery Doubles winners were Carl Christman with Cleo Travis, 599, Dennis Langham with Steve Jester, 642, and Leilani Wiggins with Herb Scott, 549.
There were no winners in the special challenge shots this week but there was almost $350 won in strike pot tickets.
Winners were Teri Jester, Roy Johnson, Armour Brown, Carl Christman, Dave Yett, Leilani Wiggins, and Jeff Bowman.
But have no fear as there was still over $100 to start next week’s fund.
