Pressure is building on Biden to step aside, Democrats feel powerless to replace him
WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders says he’s not confident President Joe Biden can win the election this fall in the wake of last week’s debate. But like most of the rest of the Democrats in Congress, he says he does not want Biden to step aside. The Vermont senator’s unyielding support for the embattled president highlights the divide between the Democratic Party’s leadership and the private conversations of many donors, strategists and party insiders who want to replace Biden to avoid what many see as certain defeat this November.
Judge delays Trump’s hush money sentencing until at least September
Donald Trump’s sentencing in his hush money case has been postponed until at least Sept. 18, a major reprieve for the Republican former president. The judge agreed Tuesday to put it off while weighing the possible impact of a new Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. Trump had been scheduled to face sentencing July 11 on his New York conviction on felony charges of falsifying business records. He denies any wrongdoing. A Supreme Court ruling Monday granted broad immunity protections to presidents. Trump had been scheduled to face sentencing July 11 and has been pressing for delays on various criminal cases.
FDA approves a second Alzheimer’s drug that can modestly slow disease
WASHINGTON — U.S. health officials have approved a new Alzheimer’s drug that can modestly slow the disease. It’s only the second drug that’s been convincingly shown to slow the memory-destroying condition. The Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly’s medication Tuesday for patients with early or mild cases of dementia caused by Alzheimer’s. Kisunla is not a cure and slows worsening memory and cognitive problems by about seven months. The FDA approved a similar drug, Leqembi, from a Japanese drugmaker last year. Lilly’s drug has several possible advantages to that medicine, including requiring only one infusion per month instead of two.
Giuliani is disbarred in New York as court finds he repeatedly lied about 2020 election
NEW YORK — Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, federal prosecutor and legal adviser to Donald Trump, has been disbarred in New York. The Manhattan appeals court found he repeatedly made false statements about Trump’s 2020 election loss. The court ruled Giuliani, who had his New York law license suspended in 2021 for making false statements around the election, is no longer allowed to practice law in the state, effective immediately. Giuliani says he wasn’t surprised to lose his law license in his hometown, claiming in a post on the social media platform X that the case was “based on an activist complaint, replete with false arguments.”
Strike kills family as Israeli evacuation order sparks panicked flight from Gaza city
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — Palestinian families are streaming out of a southern Gaza city after the Israeli military ordered an evacuation of much of Khan Younis. One family fled north to a site inside an Israeli-declared safe zone, but hours later, an airstrike hit the building, killing 12 people, most of the women and children from the family. The evacuation order has also triggered a panicked flight of staff and patients from one of Khan Younis’ main hospital, which the Red Cross said could no longer function. The new exodus is the third in as many months, driving more Palestinians into packed tent camps with squalid conditions.
Stampede at religious event in India kills more than 100, mostly women and children
LUCKNOW, India — Authorities say more than 100 people in India were killed in a stampede when a crowd at a religious gathering rushed to leave a makeshift tent. It was not immediately clear what triggered the panic following an event with Hindu figure Bhole Baba in northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh. Local news reports cited authorities who said heat and suffocation in the tent could have been a factor. Video of the aftermath showed the structure appeared to have collapsed. Police said at least 116 people died, most of them women and children. More than 80 others were injured and admitted to hospitals.
