BETHANY — Elgin’s Jaylon Nettles scored the winning basket, and the Owls withstood a last-second rush from Bethany to post a dramatic 51-49 win to ensure themselves a spot in the Area Tournament this week.
However, the Owls suffered a 61-48 loss to Oklahoma Christian School the following night. Despite the loss, Elgin and OCS both advanced to the Area tourney at Hennessey, which started Thursday. Elgin played Classen SAS Thursday afternoon, but the final score was not available at press time.
Elgin’s season record stands at 13-13.
“Jaylon hit a floater with about nine seconds left, and then Bethany ran a quick set but couldn’t make the shot,” Elgin head coach Ryan Green said.
Bethany attempted a desperation shot as time expired, but to no avail. Elgin lost to Bethany earlier in the season, 65-51.
“We started off the tournament big with the win against Bethany and played OCS tough but didn’t make the plays down the stretch,” Green said. “We had a pretty good outing and competed with them.”
Elgin pulled to within three points in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the Owls came to catching the Saints, who took a 20-5 lead in the first quarter.
“We had a few (scoring) runs in the second half, including a 10-2 run that put us within three with three minutes left,” Green said.
