Following a July non-jury trial, a 70-year-old Cache man will serve 20 years in prison for stabbing another man because he was angry during an argument.
Following a non-jury trial in Comanche County District Court that began on July 26 and ended Aug. 1, James Hines Wyrick was found guilty of a felony count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after two or more felony convictions.
Following a pre-sentence investigation and request for enhancement of the penalty, on Thursday, Comanche County District Judge Scott D. Meaders sentenced Wyrick to serve 20 years with the Department of Corrections and to pay $1,244.00 in fines, fees and court costs.
Wyrick was found guilty of the May 4, 2024, stabbing that happened on Comanche Nation trust land at 18514 Cache Road. Comanche Nation Police Officer officers were called shortly before 5 p.m. regarding a stabbing call and arrived to find Wyrick being held down on the floor by other family members, the probable cause affidavit states.
Investigators learned Wyrick and another man had gotten into a physical fight in the kitchen area that included grabbing, pushing and hitting each other. Wyrick picked up a purple kitchen knife and stabbed the other man twice in the upper left shoulder area before being tackled and held down by several people, the affidavit states.
Investigators said Wyrick told them he tried to wound the other unarmed man with the knife. He said he did it “out of anger and in an effort to get (victim) before he was able to get him,” according to the affidavit.
Wyrick has prior felony convictions in Comanche County from July 1980 for second-degree burglary, and from January 1994 for counts of convicted felons prohibited of carrying firearms and first-degree burglary,, records indicate.
Wyrick has been held on $75,000 bond since his initial court appearance in May 2023. He will be sent to a correctional facility within 10 days.
