The Lawton City Council launched its new term Monday with its newest member, Ward 7 Councilwoman Sherene L. Williams.
Williams, Ward 6 Councilman Bob Weger and Ward 8 Councilman Randy Warren all took their constitutional and statutory oaths of office from Municipal Judge Nathan Johnson, which is the official start of the 2024 council term. Warren won his election to to take his seat for his final three-year term (due to term limits), while Weger avoided an election when the Comanche County Election Board disqualified his challenger. That decision gave Weger a new three-year term after completing the unexpired term of former Ward 6 Councilman Sean Fortenbaugh.
Williams’ first regular meeting as the Ward 7 representative will be today, and she said Monday she was excited to be there and thanked the residents of Ward 7 for allowing her to serve the citizens of Lawton. Williams said she strongly believes that city officials are doing their best to improve their city, and she said she will be part of that effort.
“I do believe in being a team player,” she said.
Mayor Stan Booker said there will be a lot going on in the coming year, following on the heels of an active year that he will highlight today during a New Year’s address. And, he and other council members welcomed Williams to their ranks. They also lauded the six years of service that Onreka Johnson gave as the Ward 7 councilwoman.
Johnson said she enjoyed being part of the council team and participating in activities that bettered the community, saying “at the end of the day, we did the best for citizens.” Johnson described her departure as bittersweet, adding that while she will miss fellow council members, they also know she was active in the community before her election and she will remain active as she leaves the council.
Booker cited Johnson’s focus on Lawton youth, adding that her work to create a Youth City Council will continue under the management of the mayor and city manager offices.
