Elgin swimmers aim to qualify for 5A state meet

DUNCAN — Elgin’s Ellie Stevenson continued to show her power and speed in the 100-meter freestyle event by outpacing Class 6A swimmers at the Duncan meet last week.

Stevenson notched the win with a time of 1:13.06, which was a second faster than three other competitors, including two from 6A Mustang High School. Stevenson also finished second in the 200-meter freestyle and swam the anchor leg of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that finished third with a time of 5:28.31. Other team members are Kylie Delozier, Amira Papp-Cservenák and Persaus Martinez.

Stevenson also swam the third leg of Elgin’s 400-meter medley relay team that finished fourth with a time of 2:49.50. Other team members are Delozier, Janeeva Smith and Josie Pearson.

As a team, Elgin girls finished third in the team standings with 251 points. Class 6A’s Mustang won the meet followed by Yukon in second. Other schools in the meet were Duncan, Chickasha, Lawton Ike, Lawton Mac, Marlow and Lawton High.

“I think the meet went really well for us,” Elgin coach Corey Grochow said. “It was a good indication of how well they can push themselves when they’re tired.”

Elgin competed in three meets in nine days.

“We look good going into our championship season. With the meets we’ve had in the last week, it’s really tested our endurance,” Grochow said. “In the beginning (of the season), the girls looked rough. We had so many new girls on our relays, but they’re starting to get the timing right.”

In the boys’ division, Mason Thompson finished third in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:19.15, four seconds behind first place winner Gage DaVoult of Marlow. Thompson finished seventh in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:05.85, which was five seconds behind the winner.

Murdoc Bradley also finished seventh in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 6:16.06.

As a team, Elgin’s boys finished seventh with 159 points.
