CYRIL – Kalvin Cook, of Apache, aka Kowboy Kal and “Wild West Showman Extraordinaire”, has temporarily set aside his trick rope in exchange for a chainsaw.
Since entertainment events were canceled all across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Kal has begun taking commissions on artistic tree carvings instead of his usual trick show roping events. Challenged to turn an old dying tree on Idaho Avenue in Cyril into a unique masterpiece, Kal has spent the past month with chainsaw in hand, carving out a one-of-a-kind piece in the form of a pirate. Complete with a treasure chest, long-tailed coat, sash, pistol, fancy hat, hook and feathered sidekick resting on his shoulder, the recently formed statue is a symbol for all Cyril pirates.
With no trick roping shows on the books any time soon, Kal said for now he plans to continue expressing his artistic side with even more local chainsaw tree carvings. The Cyril pirate is Kal’s tenth commissioned chainsaw sculpture to date.
