Three days of trial, a denied motion for a mistrial and 2 hours and 15 minutes of sequestration, a Comanche County jury found a second man guilty of the April 2023 shooting death of Shakirr Cogdell.
Fernando O’Neil Devin Daniels was found guilty in Comanche County District Judge Grant Sheperd’s court of felony charges of first-degree murder, shooting into a dwelling, conspiracy to use a vehicle to fire a gun and possession of a firearm after former felony convictions, records indicate.
The jury recommended Daniels serve life in prison for the murder charge and 10 years each for the remaining charges.
Daniels and Corey Dion Schexnayder Jr. have now each been convicted of shooting an apartment at the Timbers Apartments, 120 NW 44th, the morning of April 2, 2023 killing Cogdell.
On Wednesday, defense attorney Al Hoch moved for a mistrial in Daniels’ case due to a witness telling the jury she’d met him when he was released from prison. The court excused the jurors for the day and, after review, Sheperd denied the request.
Last week, Schexnayder was found guilty by a jury of felony counts of first-degree murder — deliberate intent, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, shooting into a dwelling, and conspiracy to commit felony discharging a firearm into a dwelling. Life without parole was their recommended sentence for the murder count.
Following a pre-sentencing investigation, Schexnayder will be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. May 1. He is in jail on no bond.
Daniels was also remanded to the Comanche County Detention Center with no bond. He is scheduled to be sentenced at 11 a.m. May 13.
