Two ill-fated attempts to get contraband behind the walls of the Lawton Correctional Facility landed a man and woman behind bars instead.
Jarvis Jordan Toya, 30, and Shanea Anna Steinfeld, 48, both of Oklahoma City, made initial appearances Wednesday in Comanche County District Court, records indicate.
Toya received felony charges of aggravated trafficking in fentanyl, trafficking in methamphetamine and cocaine, attempt to bring contraband into a penal institution, and conspiracy to commit bringing contraband into a penal institution, as well as misdemeanor counts of possession of controlled dangerous substances and obstructing police.
Steinfeld received felony charges of attempting to bring contraband into a penal institution and conspiracy to commit bringing contraband into a penal institution.
Suspicious SUV at prison
The arrests came after prison officers noticed two people getting out of the same SUV in the prison parking lot, 8607 SE Flower Mound Road.
Corrections Corporal Timothy Franklin stated he was contacted by another officer about a possible contraband drop at the prison after the pair got out of an SUV in the parking lot. A man with a backpack was seen walking toward the fence where an inmate had created a hole through his cell to the outside, the probable cause affidavit states. The SUV then left the grounds and other officers followed it traveling northbound on Southeast Flower Mound Road toward Gore Boulevard.
As the vehicle got onto Interstate 44 and took off at a high rate of speed, Comanche County Sheriff’s Deputies joined and a traffic stop was made near Fletcher. Toya fled toward an open field and was captured after he was tangled up in a barbed wire fence. When asked why he ran, Toya said he was worried he had warrants out of Oklahoma County, the affidavit states. When asked why he was in Lawton, he said he was visiting a friend and got lost, ending up at the prison, Franklin stated.
While awaiting EMS to check Toya’s injuries, he was searched and baggies containing methamphetamine, cocaine, three fentanyl pills and multiple pieces of paraphernalia were recovered from his pockets, according to the affidavit.
A K-9 officer was brought to the scene and immediately alerted to narcotics, jumping into the vehicle and going into the backseat where a backpack containing multiple packages consistent with contraband drops were found. Fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine were later confirmed to be in the packages, along with cellphones, according to investigators.
Toya declined to speak with investigators due to not feeling well after his attempted escape. He was treated for his injuries and released back into law enforcement custody and booked into jail, the affidavit states.
Woman spills beans about the plan
Steinfeld told investigators she knew Toya from a friend and that she was asked to take him to the prison so he could visit a prisoner, Franklin stated. When told of the packages of drugs inside the backpack, she said Toya told her where to drive and park and she assumed he was going to visit the prisoner, according to the affidavit.
Toya has a January 2015 felony conviction in Oklahoma County for a count of unauthorizes use of a motor vehicle, records indicate.
Steinfeld is out on $30,000 bond. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Aug. 28.
Toya is being held on $100,000 bond with the condition he wear a GPS monitor. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 9, records indicate.
