A Lawton police officer’s heroism and quick action saved a life in February.
In April, he was honored at the Lawton Police Department’s Awards Banquet with the Lawton Police Department Life Saving Award.
Officer Montana Mullins received the award from Captain Mark Mason.
Mullins’ honor followed a Feb. 8 shooting call he responded to. Upon arrival, he found a person lying in the yard, wounded from multiple gunshots to the back and arms. His actions saved a life, said Sgt. Christopher Blessing, LPD information officer.
After running to his patrol unit to retrieve his medical kit to render aid, Mullins placed two chest seals over the two most heavily bleeding gunshot wounds on the victim’s upper back, and used one of the chest seal wrappers to control bleeding on another gunshot wound. He also used medical gauze on one of the lower gunshot wounds.
While waiting for EMS to arrive, the victim seemed lifeless but regained some coloration and became alert due to Mullins’ efforts. EMS arrived and took over medical treatment and took the victim to a hospital.
After recovering, the victim wrote a letter stating that without Mullins’ actions, the victim would have bled out prior to EMS arriving, according to Blessing.
“A life was saved due to Officer Mullins quick thinking, devotion to duty and acting without hesitation,” Blessing said.
Mullins has been an officer for the Lawton Police Department since October 2021.
