Anyone who came to The Medicine Park Aquarium and Natural Sciences Center last week had the opportunity to view different animals up close and even pet some of them.
One of which was a Flemish Rabbit named Rupert.
The 2-year-old gray “wabbit” was bred to come to the Aquarium, Nicole Brown, deputy director of the Aquarium said. His diet consists of rabbit pellets, fruits, vegetables and hay.
“(Flemish Rabbits) usually come from Belgium,” Brown said. “They’re very heavy in the pet trade.”
Rupert was one of many animals who stole the spotlight during the Aquarium’s Animal Ambassador shows. Other animals included skunks, African Gray parrots, Red Green Macaws, snakes, prairie dogs and creepy crawlies.
“Everybody’s favorite ambassadors came out with all the skunks and possums, Rupert, Poppy (the prairie dog) and all our parrots came out,” Brown said.
Whichever animal is in a good mood is who will be shown, Brown said. The animals they receive for the Aquarium are either donated or rescues.
They’re hoping to introduce more ambassadors and open their tortoise exhibit.
“More animals make an appearance in the warmer months,” Brown said. “The cooler months, it’s harder to take some of the birds out because they’re tropical.”
The shows happen every day for anyone who comes out.
“We have a different ambassador every day at 1 p.m.,” Brown said.
