There’s always a way for people in Lawton to immerse themselves in the arts and community involvement.
This month is no different — especially when everyone comes together to read.
The McMahon Auditorium Authority is hosting its National Endowment of the Arts Big Read Lawton at 10 a.m. Oct. 12 at the Museum of the Great Plains, 601 NW Ferris Ave.
As an initiative of the National Endowment of the Arts, the event aims to broaden understanding of the world, communities and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience, according to a press release.
The event is about one community reading one book, the release said. This year’s book is “The Best You Could Do,” by Thi Bui, a Vietnamese author. The event is a series of discussions and ancillary events including a special reading and discussion session with the author Oct. 25 in Lawton and Oct. 26 in Duncan.
There will be keynote speakers, Vietnamese refreshments and an art contest for different age groups with a $200 award for the winner of each age group. Attendees will receive free books and T-shirts will be given.
Lawton is one of many cities participating in the 2024-2025 NEA Big Read. The city has been awarded a $20,000 grant
