The suspect in Lawton’s second homicide of the year is behind bars on $50,000 bond.
After an arrest warrant was issued March 4, T’shun Dewayne Jones was taken into custody by the Lawton Police Department’s Gang Intelligence Unit, according to Lt. Charlie Whittington, LPD information officer.
On Monday, Jones, a.k.a. “Chop Stix,” 25, of Lawton, made his initial appearance in Comanche County District Court for a count of first-degree manslaughter, records indicate. The crime is punishable by no less than four years in prison.
Jones is accused of causing Joseph Gann’s death from his injuries on Feb. 25.
Lawton police were called to the 2300 block of Northwest Hoover Avenue regarding a disturbance and arrived to find Gann laying in the parking lot, bleeding, the probable affidavit states. Gann was taken to Comanche County Memorial Hospital and later transported to OU Medical Center where the 27-year-old died on Sunday.
Witnesses said Gann was inside an apartment and got into an argument with a man and woman. They, along with the apartment owner walked outside and the argument turned physical before Gann and the apartment owner walked away, according to the affidavit.
While walking away, investigators said Jones, who was not involved in the initial altercation, ran up behind Gann and punched him twice in the face when he turned around. Gann fell to the ground and hit his heads on the pavement, the affidavit stated.
As they walked away, Detective Christopher Adamson stated, Jones, who was not involved in the altercation, ran up behind Gann. When Gann turned around, Jones punched him twice in the face, causing him to fall on the ground and hit his head on the pavement, the affidavit states. Witneses said Jones stood over Gann before walking backwards to the 2200 block of Northwest Hoover.
Surveillance video from the apartment complex showed the incident and helped police identify Jones, investigators said.
Jones will have his preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. May 23 before Special District Judge Christine Galbraith.
