Following the success from last year, the Lawton Police Department is offering its free motorcycle safety course.
With motorcycle riders continuing to be overrepresented in fatal traffic crashes, this class is essential, according to Lt. Charles Whittington, LPD information officer.
“In 2022, there were 6,218 motorcyclists killed — 15 percent of all traffic fatalities,” he said. “The Lawton Police Department has partnered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to bring safety awareness to the motorcycle riders in Southwest Oklahoma.”
Members of the LPD Motor Unit will be conducting a motorcycle safety course on March 22, Whittington said.
“The course is no charge to the rider,” he said. “The Lawton Police Department encourages safe motorcycle skills while sharing the roads with other motorists.”
Requirements are a valid “L” endorsed driver’s license, a street legal motorcycle, insurance, a helmet, gloves, eye protection, a long-sleeved shirt and boots covering the ankle.
The location of the course is to be determined.
