The final day of filing for school board seats concluded Wednesday with a race in only one Comanche County school district, and two districts that had no one file for office.

In Lawton, Lawton Public Schools Office 5 Incumbent Zeldon Rice and Great Plains Technology Center Office 1 Incumbent Homer Ryan will keep their seats without an election, since neither man drew an opponent. The only race that will occur in Comanche County is in the Sterling Public Schools District, where Chris Hale and John Hergenrether are seeking the Office 5 seat.

Other candidates filing for office this week in Comanche County were: Cache Public Schools Office 5: Scott Messner; Chattanooga Public Schools Office 5: Jeremy Kyle Kinder; Elgin Public Schools Office 5: Shane Burk; Fletcher Public Schools Office 5: Ryan Simmons; Flower Mound Schools Office 1: Joshua Neal Sullivan; and Geronimo Public Schools Office 5: Andy Moon.

No one filed for the Office 5 seats open in Indiahoma and Bishop schools, according to the Comanche County Election Board.

Under Title 26 of state law, if no candidate for an open position on a board of education has filed and therefore a vacancy is created, the vacancy shall be filled by appointment by the board. Such persons are not required to reside in the board or election district, but must live in the school district and meet other eligibility qualifications as needed to be a candidate. If an appointment is not made within 60 days of when the board declares the seat vacant, the board must call a special election to fill the vacancy.
