A good time turned bad after the man accused of shooting his sister to death claimed he’d become angry while drinking together Sunday morning, according to police.
Joshua Ray Pedro, 26, of Lawton, made his initial appearance Wednesday in Comanche County District Court where he was charged with first-degree murder — deliberate intent and feloniously pointing a firearm, records indicate. The murder charge is punishable by life in prison, life without parole or death.
Lawton police were called shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday to 1014 SE Alta Lane to a shooting and arrived to find Mikayla Blackeagle lying on the porch suffering from several gunshot wounds, the probable cause affidavit states. Pedro was taken into custody for questioning.
“Joshua started the interview saying he killed his sister,” Detective Marcus Rucker stated.
Pedro said he’d been brought over to the house by another woman and they’d been drinking and having fun, the affidavit states. At some point, he said, he and Blackeagle began arguing and he wanted to leave. He said he believed he was pushed or tripped and fell and it made him mad so he pulled his gun from his pants pocket, chambered a round and shot her, Rucker stated. He said he shot her more than twice until she hit the ground.
A home surveillance camera captured the event. The video showed the three “laughing and having a good time” before brother and sister turned physical with Pedro hitting her in the face and her hitting him back, the investigator stated. They began fighting, the other woman tried to intervene and Pedro appeared upset before pulling the gun out, according to the affidavit. He is seen with the gun in his right hand and his left hand chambering a round, Rucker stated.
Pedro is seen walking closer to the women with the gun in his hand and is heard saying he’s going to kill them, the affidavit states. Moments later, he shoots Blackeagle before the gun malfunctioned, then chambers another round and continues shooting her, according to Rucker. The other woman crouched down and Pedro is seen pointing the gun at her before walking off the porch, turning around and continuing to shoot Blackeagle at close range before walking away.
Investigators recovered 13 shell casings and one live round, according to the affidavit.
A neighbor told police he’d been outside his home when he heard noises from his chainlink fence and asked the man, later determined to be Pedro, what he was doing in his yard, Rucker stated. Pedro was standing behind a tree and finally came out and raised his hands before eventually leaving, the affidavit states.
Pedro admitted he’d been in the yard but said he didn’t have the gun with him at that time after throwing it in the street, Rucker stated. The gun, a 9mm semi-automatic, was recovered from the street, according to the affidavit.
Held on $1 million bond, Pedro returns to court at 3 p.m. June 18 for his preliminary hearing conference.
Blackeagle’s death is the fifth reported homicide in the city this year, according to Constitution records.
