Elgin splits matches at Weatherford tourney

ALTUS – Elgin’s volleyball returned to the win column Tuesday night with a three-set victory over Altus.
The Lady Owls, 4-8, won in straight sets, 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18.
“They seemed to do well, and it looked like they were having fun,” said Elgin head coach Jenny Walker who watched the game on a live feed from Elgin. Walker is 35 weeks pregnant and has been advised not to travel with the team in the latter parts of her pregnancy, she said.
“I expect that by the end of our match with (Lawton) MacArthur, the last piece of the puzzle will click,” she said. “We have beaten ourselves with a number of errors. We do a great job of hanging in there and we make a series of miscues. I think we’ll fix those errors and once we do things will look a lot different. We’ll be a tough team to beat.”
Elgin will host Class 5A’s No. 2-ranked Lawton MacArthur on Sept. 20.
Six of Elgin’s eight losses have come to ranked teams, including Newcastle, Duncan, Tuttle and Cascia Hall.
“We had a spell of playing tough teams back-to-back-to-back,” Walker said.
However, Elgin came up big by defeating El Reno in the opening match of the Weatherford Tournament last weekend. The Lady Owls won in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-17. Elgin dropped its next match against a tall Southwest Covenant team, 25-9 and 25-14.
