The play units within Greer Park’s Kid’s Zone will be dismantled, beginning next week.
City of Lawton officials made the decision last year to rebuild a new children’s play area in Greer Park, after dismantling the wooden structures that were erected through a community project 24 years ago. The process to dismantle the wooden structures is slated to begin Tuesday and is expected to take three days.
“We are not deconstructing the entire park, but rather the play unit within the park,” said Parks Supervisor Michael Glaze-Lyle. “This is a crucial step before we can begin resurfacing and constructing the new Kid’s Zone, which will provide a world-class facility for our community.”
City officials said the park will be closed for at least three months to accommodate the upgrades, and the area will be clearly marked as a construction zone. Once the upgrades and resurfacing are complete, the park is expected to reopen in mid-June at its site at Northwest 38th Street and Meadowbrook Avenue.
Parks and Recreation Director Larry Parks has said the new project is focused on playground equipment, meaning all other amenities installed as part of Kid’s Zone will remain in place. City officials also have said the project will include something they have wanted to do for years: install a real parking lot to replace the dirt/gravel area on Greer Park’s west side.
The upgrades are being funded through PROPEL 2040, the Capital Improvements Program Extension that city voters approved in August. Parks has said $2 million upgrade will provide cutting-edge amenities and create a one-of-a-kind recreational destination.
“We’re excited about the future of Greer Park and the Kid’s Zone,” Glaze-Lyle said. “This new space will foster community engagement, health, and relaxation, providing opportunities for residents to connect in a unique and meaningful way.”
