Digital training sessions planned next week at Lawton Public Library

Friends of Lawton Public Library will host free digital skills training workshops Dec. 18-19 at Lawton Public Library, 110 SW 4th.

Classes are intended for learners who are new to using a computer and want to build confidence while staying safe online, library officials said. Topics will include using web browsers, creating passwords that are hard to guess, using search engines and navigating a mobile device.

The hour-long sessions will include:

Dec. 18:

• Computer Basics: 11 a.m.-noon.

• Internet Basics: noon-1 p.m.

• Email Basics: 1-2 p.m.

Dec. 19:

• Mobile Device Basics: 11 a.m.-noon.

• Video Conferencing: noon-1 p.m.

• Internet Safety: 1-2 p.m.

A light lunch will be provided for those that attend.

Friends of Lawton Public Library is partnering with Connected Nation, a national nonprofit committed to bridging the Digital Divide, to host digital skills training.

“Our goal is to significantly enhance digital literacy in the region,” said Heather Gate, executive vice president, digital inclusion for Connected Nation. “We have designed these classes with that aim in mind, and we are eager to provide our materials to those who wish to pursue further education after the workshops have concluded.”

“Friends of Lawton Public Library is a non-profit organization made up of individuals, families, students, organizations and corporations who believe in the importance of libraries for people of all ages,” said Daniel Phelps, library technology specialist. “Empowering a wide range of community members with essential digital skills is vital in today’s digital landscape.”
