Saturday morning began a sweet day’s journey for Pat Henry Elementary students and teachers alike.

They were decorating a trailer for entry in the evening’s Holiday in the Park parade.

Fifth grade teacher Kristina Morris led the operation to put white boards with ruffles along the sides of the trailer that would haul fourth and fifth grade students through the parade route later. There would be crafted pieces of candy, lollipops and peppermint sticks for decor along with a constructed Candyland board over the boards to stick with the parade’s theme.

“It’ll definitely make you want to eat some candy,” she said. “Something sweet.”

This is the second year the school has entered a float, Morris said. Last year’s was a student council project. After Thanksgiving, the student council will be participating in some community action projects, she said.

“The kids have really come up with good ideas this year,” she said.

At this time, however, it’s all about finishing the float.

Fifth grader Lena Griffey, student council secretary, said she’s excited for the float’s completion. After years of watching the annual parade, being a part of it is kind of a sweet dream come true.

Demetra Mills, another fifth grader, said the float was going to look pretty with all the flowers they’re going to add.

When they post up as No. 111 for the parade, what the kids know would be witnessed by thousands lining the route.

And it would be delicious.
