Numerous Southwest Oklahoma athletes including two from Eisenhower and another from Elgin stood on the podium over the weekend at Western Heights High School as the 6A-5A State Track and Field championships were held to cap a busy few weeks of spring sports competition.
Eisenhower didn’t send but a few athletes to state but one of those was Da’Rigue Cornegay who claimed the title in the 6A high jump with a leap of 6-8, beating out the closest competitor by two inches.
Eagles’ Jakayla Morgan clocked 43.07 to win the 300 hurdles and strike gold. She also finished sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.32.
Morgan wasn’t finished as she ran the anchor leg on the 4×200 relay that claimed a title with a time of 1:39.99. She ran with Zharria Hawkins, Marchell Watson and Jamie Morgan.
Elgin’s Niqualas Chew, competing in Class 5A won the long jump with a leap of 23-11 which was good for gold but a little off what he’d jumped during the season.
Those were among the top performances for area athletes.
As far as the team competition, the best performance came from the MacArthur boys who finished third with 56 points. Carl Albert raced up that title with 89 points while Lincoln Christian was second with 85.
Mac gathered the bulk of its points with a fourth in the 4×200 relay and a fifth in the 4×800 relay. The Highlanders also got a pair of placements in the 100 where Quinton Mask was fourth in 10.86 and Aiden Chambers was sixth in 10.9. They finished just behind Elgin’s Treyvon Crabtree who ran a 10.77.
Mac also got points from Carson Burd. Who was fourth in the 1600 and third in the 3200 to add to the Mac total.
