Citizens police academy taking applications

The Lawton Citizens Police Academy is taking applications from citizens who want to gain insights into the work of the local department.

“The Citizens Police Academy is designed to give the public an overview of the Lawton Police Department,” said Lt. Charles Whittington, LPD information officer. “This is a great opportunity for civilians and citizens of Lawton to get to know the officers who serve and protect in their community. “

The 12-weeks of training begins Feb. 6.

The academy is designed to offer citizens an overview of how the Lawton Police Department functions as well as create two-way communication between citizens and officers. The course includes information on operations, community issues, videos and hands-on training to help citizens better understand how they can help to make the community safer.

The Citizens Police Academy will be 12, three-hour weekly sessions each Thursday at the Great Plains Tech Center Building 900, 4500 W. Lee, and is completely free to the public.

Any person 18 and older who lives or works in the Lawton or Comanche County area is eligible to attend.

The goal of the Citizens Police Academy is to build trust and better relationships between police and citizens through education and interaction, police officials said. Partnering with citizens is hoped to successfully bridge the gap between citizens and law enforcement, according to a statement from LPD. It also will open a window to issues police face on a daily basis while equipping citizens with resources.
