Police said a woman’s erratic driving led to a traffic stop and the discovery of over 550 grams of fentanyl in a child’s car seat.
Charen Jeckwincya-Money Schaeffer, 34, of Lawton, made her initial appearance Tuesday in Comanche County District Court where she received a felony charge of aggravated drug trafficking and misdemeanor counts of failure to signal and speeding, records indicate. The drug trafficking count is punishable by between two years to life in prison.
A Lawton police unit on patrol stopped Schaeffer after the car she was driving failed to signal when it exited Rogers Lane onto North Sheridan Road about 10 p.m. Oct. 27, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Schaeffer told police she has a valid license but didn’t have it with her. A K-9 officer was brought to the scene to conduct an open-air sniff for drugs.
An officer saw a clear baggie containing pills in the child seat in the back of the car. The K-9 officer alerted to drugs and during a search of the car seat, police recovered five baggies containing fentanyl that weight 557.68 grams, according to the affidavit. Schaeffer was arrested and the drugs submitted to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further analysis.
Held on $70,000 bond, Schaeffer returns to court at 3 p.m. Feb. 27, 2024, for her preliminary hearing conference.
