Lawton Public Schools is back with its third annual Cardboard Cup. The contest pits elementary teams against each other in a friendly competition with the task of creating student-made cardboard boats and racing them across Rinehart’s 25-meter pool on Fort Sill.
The event kicks off at 9 a.m. Friday at Rinehart Fitness Center on Fort Sill.
The teams are made up of students from each LPS elementary’s Makerspace program, a collaborative elementary course that allows students to create and experiment on guided projects that align with science, technology, engineering and mathematics standards.
“The LPS Cardboard Cup can help students understand many skills including natural buoyancy and surface area,” Assistant Director of Educational Technology Vanessa Perez said. “It is also a great opportunity for our students to learn STEM principles, collaborate, and apply the engineering design process.”
The teams have chances of designing and winning in four categories: the cardboard boat with best time; the most aesthetic boat, the best designed boat that does not enter the water; the recycled robot boat, a smaller boat powered by a robot; and the best team logo award.
The students prepared for several weeks before the winter break testing boat designs and their durability. For the cardboard boat race, students will have one of their team members inside the boat paddling their way to the finish line.
All of the contest boats were created by students. Adults are only allowed to advise, help hold down cardboard and cut the cardboard for the students.
The Cardboard Cup will be streamed live on youtube.com/LPSTV.
