Cameron University’s basketball teams came up against another solid shooting effort from Lone Star Conference opponent St. Edward’s and in the end the Hilltoppers left Lawton with a pair of wins,
The Aggie women wound up falling, 83-76, as free throw shooting proved to be important in the final quarter of action. The Cameron men not only had trouble shooting but the Aggies committed 22 turnovers which the Hilltoppers turned into 23 points. Conversely, the Hilltoppers committed just four turnovers which the Aggies turned into just two points.
Cameron’s teams will make the short drive south to Wichita Falls Thursday for a Lone Star Conference doubleheader against Midwestern at 5:30 p.m.
Late woes doom CU women
The Cameron women were still in good position at the 3:22 mark of the fourth quarter when Kennedy Cummings got inside for a layup that cut the St. Edward’s lead to two, 73-71.
The visitors from San Antonio quickly pushed the lead to four at 75-71 on a short jumper from Isabel Langenberg and a timeout followed for St. Edward’s.
Out of the timeout, Cameron’s Kennedy Cummings missed a 3-point attempt and the Hilltoppers rushed the ball upcourt and Janiah Perkins hit another jumper and the lead had jumped to six, 77-71.
Shamika Smith was fouled on CU’s next possession but she only sank one free throw but the Aggies dodged a couple of St. Edward’s misses and Smith grabbed a rebound and was fouled.
She made one free throw but missed the second and by then the clock was down to 16 seconds and the Aggies were unable to get any closer.
Cameron had good scoring balance with four players in double figures with Smith leading the way with 24. Grace Alverson and Madison Griggs each added 11 and Mercedez Mancha added 10.
Cameron did find its outside shooting touch Saturday with the Aggies hitting 9-of-29 for 31 percent. But on the downside, CU hit just 17-of-28 from the free throw line for a below-par 60.7 percent. The Hilltoppers were much better, knocking down 17-of-22 for 77.3 percent which wound up being a key factor in the win.
Aggies struggle with turnovers
The problems for the Cameron men were primarily from the turnover disparity but the Aggies also saw the visitors with a 54-36 edge in the points in the paint statistic.
Cameron made some shots in the early going but in the second half the Hilltoppers just kept expanding the lead.
Lavell Brodnex led the Aggies with 22 points while Jaxon Ingram and Aaron Jacob each produced 12 points.
