Aggie women earn tennis win

Cameron’s women’s tennis team won its second match against MIAA opponent Northwest Missouri State, 4-3. in home match Sunday.

After being rained out Saturday, the Aggies came out strong by claiming the doubles point with strong play at No. 2 doubles by Magda Wawrowska and Martyna Jankowska with a 6-3 win after a dominating performance at No. 1 doubles with a 6-1 win by Jenna Goessel and Anastasia Uspenskaia.

Cameron kept up the pressure after the doubles with straight set victories at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles to decide the match by Jankowska, Goessel, and Wawrowska. The Aggies continued to compete for the extra match wins after the decision before dropping the remaining matches in close decisions. At No. 1 singles, Uspenskaia lost a close 3-set match to a nationally ranked opponent after dropping the first set. The two freshman battled through tough matches as well at No. 5 and No. 6 in straight set losses.

Coach Josh Cobble said this about the performance, “We have had several challenges this semester in dealing with injuries, but we have a standard of what it means to compete well here at Cameron and these ladies have continued to step up to that standard.

“Our opportunity to succeed this year is going to be determined in how well we compete together every time we step out on the court. This match shows what they are capable of together.”

The Aggies will attempt to continue their winning ways when they host Southwest Baptist Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Streich-Henry Family Tennis Complex at Cameron.

Cameron men take down NW Missouri

Cameron’s men’s tennis team earned its second win of the weekend with a 6-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State Sunday.

Missing their match Saturday against Arkansas-Ft.Smith due to heavy rain, the Aggies came out strong against the Bearcats.

Starting with a bang, the Aggies sweep the doubles with dominating victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-2 followed by a 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles. No. 2 doubles pair of Kristian Kubik and Lachlan Setina have now won their past four doubles sets.

The Aggies started the singles strong with a straight set win at No. 1 singles by Louis Boilevin against No. 39-ranked Wijntjes, 6-2, 6-3, followed by No. 32-ranked Noe Milliard at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-4, victory.

At No. 3 singles, Pavel Kelo won his second straight match in a highly contest three set match 7-5 in the third set. Vicente Preto clinched the match for the Aggies with a one-sided 6-3, 6-1 victory giving the Aggies their final necessary point.

The final win of the day came from No. 5 singles where Raphael Valente wins a match tiebreak 10-5 in place of a third set to give the Aggies the 6-1 victory.

Softball team sweeps LSC foe

Cameron’s softball team came up with a dramatic comeback in the second game of Sunday’s Lone Star Conference doubleheader against Texas Permian Basin to earn a sweep to even its conference record at 8-8.

The Aggies won the opener, 4-1, and then scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings where CU pulled out an 11-10 walk-off win. In the eighth Mia Garcia delivered a hit that plated Rylee Ross to end the game.

But the seventh was where the Aggies faced a challenge but they responded thanks to Madysen Boutwell’s solo home run, a Ross RBI double and a critical error by the visitors that allowed two unearned runs to score.

Permian Basin had built a 6-1 lead after the top of the fourth but the Aggies started chipping away with a Kaiden Boren solo homer in the sixth and a Garcia RBI hit that got another run across to make it 8-3.

Presleigh Payne earned the win in relief for the Aggies, working 2 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. She closed out the game after the Aggies’ explosive seventh-inning rally.

On the first game Stormee Reed was dominating in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits. She fanned 10 and made sure the Aggies were able to make do with four runs.

Boutwell crushed a two-run double in the first inning, Haley Gardella added an RBI double, Kyndel McDaniel had a double and Ross had a pair of hits, one a double, and scored a run. Kelsey Creech added a triple and scored from her leadoff spot.

The Aggies will look to build on the momentum of the sweep when they head south to San Antonio for two doubleheaders as they try to get above the .500 mark in the Lone Star Conference.

The weekend gets off to a tough start when the Aggies face St. Mary’s Friday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.

Saint Mary’s is currently 10-6 in the LSC which is good for a share of second place and the Rattlers are 15-12 overall. Oklahoma Christian, St. Mary’s and A&M-Kingsville are tied for second behind East Division leader UT-Tyler which is 14-2 in the LSC. Cameron is tied with Texas Woman’s and A&M-International for fifth.
