The Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting will have its annual lighting ceremony on Sunday.
The annual event is held to honor the memories of sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and grandchildren who left too soon.
The Lawton event will be held at 7 p.m. local time at Lawton First Church of the Nazarene, 1402 NW Arlington. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring photos, framed or unframed, before 7 p.m. to add to the memory table. Refreshments will be served afterward.
Candles around the world will be lit at the same time to create a 24-hour wave of light.
The Compassionate Friends’s Worldwide Candle Lighting is held each December to recognize National Children’s Memorial Day. This day was officially designated and recognized by Proclamation in 1998 by then-President Bill Clinton. This significant national Day of Remembrance was established to honor all families who have experienced the devastating loss of a child. Families across the world light candles in their local time zones to honor their loved ones, according to a press release.
