Cindy McIntyre will show the impact video can have on visual storytelling during a presentation to the Wichita Wildlight Photographic Society at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Using consumer-grade cameras, an underwater point-and-shoot, GoPro, and iPhone cameras, McIntyre has documented soldiers undergoing basic combat training at Fort Sill, cargo aircraft takeoffs and landings at Fort Hunter Liggett in California, the song of the painted bunting, the struggles of a bull elk to protect his harem from challengers, and underwater interactions with manatees in Florida.
A professional photographer for more than 40 years, McIntyre began using video to document her son’s childhood, and added it to her wedding photography repertoire in the 1980s. She wanted to go beyond stills to capture action, sounds, behaviors, and the “you were there” experience.
She will give tips she has often learned the hard way, as well as insights into making better videos. Many of her wildlife and nature videos are made from the driver’s seat of her car, with the camera mounted on the window. Others are made on a tripod with a fluid head to avoid jerkiness seen in handheld recordings, according to a press release.
McIntyre has won numerous awards in photography, journalism, video, and social media. She has lived on all three U.S. coasts and worked in five national park units, one wildlife refuge, and three Department of Defense installations since 2009 before retiring in Lawton in 2022.
The meeting will be held at Boulevard Congregational Church, 5309 W. Gore, directly across from Eisenhower High School. Photographers of all skill levels are welcome. There is no charge to attend.
The public is welcome at all meetings, which are held the second Thursday of each month. As a member of the Lawton Arts for All organization, WWPS is partly funded by its participation in community events and by its members giving classes and displaying photographic art for the public.
