Just call this week the calm before the big storms to come as numerous city-area football teams have games this week that will give them a chance to get a large number of players on the field before tougher challenges on the horizon.

This week’s schedule begins with Northwest Classen coming to Cameron Stadium today to face Lawton High School in a 7 p.m. contest as the Wolverines celebrate homecoming. Also tonight, Cache visits Elk City and Empire visits Walters.

Friday’s Lawton-area games include Ardmore coming to Lawton to face MacArthur, Altus driving to Elgin and Eisenhower heading to Piedmont for a stern District 5A-2 battle.

Here is how we see this week’s games turning out. Remember, home teams are listed in all-capital letters:

LAWTON HIGH 36, Northwest Classen 6 — Wolverines are going to get some of their players back from the injury list and the Knights shouldn’t be able to stay with LHS if those starters return.

Cache 24, ELK CITY 21 — This could be a dandy and that could mean that Cache’s Ben Angiel could provide the winning margin.

WALTERS 20, Empire 14 — We haven’t seen either team play in person but the Blue Devils are usually tough at home.

Friday’s games

PIEDMONT 28, Eisenhower 15 — After losing to McGuinness last week, the Eagles need to pick up a surprise win somewhere to get into the playoff picture and while this will be a tough test, Ike has the tools to win if it can eliminate turnovers and penalties.

MACARTHUR 40, Ardmore 7 — The Highlanders will be celebrating homecoming and this crew should give the home fans just what they want, a big win.

ELGIN 42, Altus 13 — The Owls are playing well and have too many weapons on both sides of the ball to let this one stay close until the second half. Altus is definitely improving, though, and the Owls better be focused.

Duncan 28, NOBLE 27 — Just have a feeling about this one even though it’s on the road. Noble gave up a bunch of points last week and the Demons are improving with each snap.

APACHE 42, Cordell 6 — War drums will be singing their haunting beat Friday during the warmups but Houston Herrin and the Apache defense will make their own music when the whistle blows.

MARLOW 35, Dickson 0 — Outlaws are just a more complete team and they are playing at home. Enough said.

COMMUNITY CHRISTIAN 14, Comanche 6 — Another game where we’ve been unable to get a good handle on the two competitors. Indians are still struggling on both sides of the ball.

Carnegie 42, SNYDER 6 — Long season for the Cyclones as they transition back to eight-man ball.

Velma-Alma 36, CYRIL 14 — Comets have been playing well and the Pirates are still trying to fill a few gaps.

ALEX 28, Central High 13 — Longhorns have a few more weapons but expect the Bronchos to keep it close for a half.

GRANDFIELD 32, Bray-Doyle 12 — Bearcats seem to be improving and they get to play at home.

MT. VIEW-GOTEBO 42, Temple 14 — Tigers seem bound for a playoff run again.

Tipton 48, GEARY 6 — Both teams are 2-0 in District C-2 but the Tigers have played the second-best team in the district in Ryan and Geary has played the two teams at the bottom of the standings. Buy your popcorn and soda in the first half because there might not be a second.

Last week: 13-1, 92.8 percent. Season: 56-20, 73.6 percent.
