The NAACP Lawton, Oklahoma Branch #6131-B will celebrate the NAACP’s 116th Founders’ Day at noon on Wednesday in its office building located at 1512 SW Washington, according to local Branch President, Mr. Will Scott.
The NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization, founded Feb. 12, 1909, and built on the collective courage of thousands of individuals from all races, nationalities, and faiths united in one premise — that all men and women are created equal.
According to Scott, “members of the NAACP have led the fight for civil rights, voting rights, political liberty, social justice, and the true enactment of freedom.” This year’s founders’ day chairman is Reverend Thomas Perry, who also serves as First Vice-President within the local Branch.
The NAACP Founders’ Day is one of several events celebrated in February during African American History Month. This year’s celebration will include a Proclamation from the Mayor’s Office, as well as a cake-cutting ceremony honoring the NAACP’s 116 th birthday. Voter Registration will also be available for individuals interested in registering to vote.
The entire month of February is set aside to recognize the achievements and pay tribute to African Americans who struggled through adversities to pursue freedom and equality. Scott stated that “the NAACP has consistently been at the forefront with an undeniably visible presence in contributing to every chapter of America’s history, and he is extremely proud of its bold engagement in helping to shape our society.”
The NAACP Founders’ Day celebration is a free community event open to the public and will include a reception with refreshments at the conclusion of the program.
