City of Lawton officials announced they are initiating a program to install security cameras in some city parks, including multiple sites in Elmer Thomas Park.
The project, funded with the 2019 Capital Improvements Program, is part of an initiative to improve public safety and ensure a secure environment for residents and visitors, city administrators said.
In the next 60 days, the city will install 25 cameras in Greer Park on Northwest 38th Street; the ballfields and skate park in McMahon Park on Southwest 38th Street; and in Elmer Thomas Park, to include Patriot Pavilion and Miracle Field. While the Parks and Recreation Department monitors the cameras, there are plans to incorporate emergency communications in the future, city officials said.
City officials said these cameras, totaling $49,000, will serve as a deterrent to criminal activity, assist in the quick resolution of incidents, and provide peace of mind to visitors. The long-term goal is to have security cameras in all parks, in conjunction with improved lighting, for enhanced safety and security, officials said.
