DUNCAN — An 18-year-old Duncan man accused of sexually propositioning a 12-year-old girl he’d met at church through social media has been arrested.
The Stephens County District Court issued a felony arrest warrant March 20 for Tyler Jean Haney for a count of lewd or indecent proposals to a child under 16, records indicate.
Haney made his initial court appearance Monday where he was jailed on $35,000 bond with the stipulation he have no contact with the girl.
The crime is punishable by between 3 and 20 years in prison and due to the type of charge, 85 percent of the sentence would have to be served before becoming eligible for parole.
Duncan police began investigating Haney on Dec. 6, 2023, after the girl’s father reported the man asking for sex from his pre-teen daughter through SnapChat, the warrant affidavit states. They had been talking since November 2023. Police collected screenshots of the conversation.
Haney spoke with a detective on Feb. 13 and said he knew the girl from church and knew how old she was, according to the affidavit. He also admitted to propositioning the girl for sex but said “he was just seeing how far the conversation would go.”
Records indicate Haney returns to court at 9 a.m. Aug. 7 for his preliminary hearing conference.
