The United Way of Southwest Oklahoma named its new president and CEO, Mark Woommavovah, Wednesday. He supersedes Lauren Ellis, who accepted a position as CEO of the nonprofit’s Norman branch.
Natalie Fitch, chairman of the organization’s Board of Directors, said they are excited about the appointment.
“He brings a wealth of experience and skills in relationship building, team building and project implementation, as well as a great knowledge of the Southwest Oklahoma community and strong business acumen,” Fitch said in a statement. “With his leadership, we will continue to expand United Way’s impact on quality of life across Southwest Oklahoma.”
According to a press release, Woommavovah is a retired Lt. Col. of the U.S. Army and former chairman of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma. He received an associate’s degree from Northeastern Oklahoma’s A&M College. Shortly after, he joined the Army and went to OU on a ROTC scholarship. He then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from OU. Afterwards, he spent 31 years in the Army as one of only 12 Comanche Native Americans to earn the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Woommavovah said he’s honored to take the position.
“Our organization believes that expressing gratitude and giving back to our communities creates a positive ripple effect in our lives, leading to a happy and existence filled purpose, meaningful relationships and a strong connection to community,” Woommavovah said.
Woommavovah said he starts his position May 28.
