Tipton has enjoyed a great run over the past few years in the state football playoffs and during that time the Tigers have also been a fixture at the Oklahoma Track and Field Championships. And if that pattern holds true to form, it could be another big fall for the Tillman County School’s football program.

The Tigers claimed another team title in the Class A State Meet where they scored 81 points to hold off Okeene which wound up second with 74.50 points. The Tigers didn’t claim the title in the 4×100 relay but they did take the gold in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:31.31.

Chris Addy, Arlen Taplin, JJ Jillah and Ryken Shallenburger combined to claim that gold medal and all of those runners were key members for the Tipton football crown last fall.

The Tigers didn’t rack up but the one gold medal but Addy picked up a pair of bronze medals in the 200 and 400 and AJ Gaye was fourth in both the hurdles races.

On the girls side, Cyril was the top finisher among the area teams as the Pirates were second in the Class A team race with 62 points, which was well back of the team champion Texhoma which scored 87.20.

A big chunk of the points for the Cyril girls came in the 4×200 relay which the Pirates won in a time of 1:47.26. Hadley Gibson, Addison McHugh, Whitney McHugh, and McKenzie Raasch combined to run a time of 1:47.26.

The only other gold-medal performance among the area schools came from Kayla Meason of Walters who stood on the top of the podium after running the 400 in a time of 59.88, beating out all the others who were unable to break the one-minute mark. Meason came back with a strong effort in the 800 as well, finishing third with a time of 2:23.41.

This Friday and Saturday the Class 6A and 5A qualifiers will gather at Western Heights High School to decide the final track golds of the 2024 season.
