After two straight district wins, Lawton High seniors Tyzel Zachary and Amare Perry see their team continuing to succeed as long as the team stays focused and communicates during games.
Defensive lineman Zachary is a four-year senior for the Wolverines. After football season Zachary wrestles, is on the track team, and plays video games. When he graduates high school, Zachary has plans on going to college and is hopeful he can get a scholarship in either football or wrestling. Once he gets to college, he plans on studying electrical engi-neering.
So far this season, Zachary is happy with where the team is sitting and is proud of his team’s ability to come together and play good football. He gave praises to teammates and coaches; however, the season is still one game at a time.
“I’d say it’s been going good. There’s been some up and downs, but we’ve fixed our mistakes. We’ll see how everything goes after the next game,” said Zachary. “It’s like a broth-erhood. I appreciate the coaches and all my teammates.”
Something that’s stood out to Zachary during the team’s recent success is the coaches trust in the players and his teammate’s ability to come together and be leaders on the field.
“The coaches look for us to be the coaches and leaders on the field. They want to see player leadership,” said Zachary. “We’re trying to help teacher the younger guys. If they come and ask a question, we do our best to show them how to do things right and do it the way the coaches want it done.”
Linebacker Perry is a senior in his first season at Lawton High after transferring from Westmoore. Perry spends most of his time in the gym, watching film, or hanging out with his friends. After high school Perry plans on going to college and is still undecided in what he wants to study.
Perry echoed the love for the team and how their boost in communication over the past few weeks has helped them come together and win games in district.
“We pulled through and became a team during districts, things got more serious and that helped wake us up,” said Perry. “A lot of communicating now too, it was dead at the start of the season.”
In preparation for their district games, Perry said that the team all has to be on the same page. Executing in practice and planning in the film room is just as important as giving it your all on game day.
“We’ve got to watch film and plan all week, so we know what we’re doing on the field,” said Perry. “When game time comes around you’ve got to trust the gameplan and trust your brothers.”
“Last week was good but we could do better. We played good, but there were a lot of simple mistakes we made. If we could be more disciplined this week, I think we’ll play a good game.”
For Perry, head coach Lorenzo Williams has been a spark for him to push himself eve-ry day and be the best player he can be. He says that Williams has been an influence to a lot of players at Lawton High. Being a part of the Wolverines has taught him to trust in others.
“Coach Zo really brings a lot of energy and brings out the best in everybody,” said Perry. “I’ve learned to not be afraid to ask for help. Trust in others and trust your brothers.”
