Cameron women and men turned in solid efforts on the floor of the Aggie Gym Saturday afternoon but in the end both lost narrow decisions to Lone Star Conference foe West Texas A&M.
The Cameron men were in the game all the way and were able to rally and take a lead with eight minutes remaining. But the visiting Buffaloes would regain the lead shortly afterwards and would not relinquish it after that point. Cameron stayed within striking distance for the remainder of the contest but late in the game free-throws sealed the victory for West Texas as they came out on top, 72-68.
Jaylan Thomas led all players with 19 points and nearly pulled down the double-double with nine rebounds. Jaxon Ingram had a strong performance for the Aggies with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
The Aggies are now 4-3 in the Lone Star Conference and 8-5 overall after the loss.
The CU women battled tough all game as there were eight lead changes and five ties in a hard fought battle in which both teams had nearly identical stats. Both the Aggies and the Buffs shot 43 percent from the field, both had nine offensive rebounds, and both shot similarly from the free-throw line. Cameron shot 64 percent from the charity stripe while WT shot 60 percent.
In the end it was points off the bench that made the difference in the game. The Lady Buffs got 19 points from their bench while the Aggies bench recorded just four points, as the visiting West Texas Buffs won the contest, 69-63.
Katie King led all players with 23 points. Shamica Smith led the Aggies with 9 rebounds.
With the loss, the Aggies drop to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in the Lone Star Conference.
Cameron hits the road for their next doubleheader Thursday against Eastern New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. in Portales, NM., with the women to play first and the men to follow.
