Lawton’s mass transit system will have a delayed start time today, due to the weather.
LATS officials plan to start their routes at 9 a.m. and will run inclement weather fixed routes, meaning there will be no clockwise routes run today and buses will run on arterials only. In addition, under a new policy, the system will provide rides without charge. The new policy, implemented in January, provides rides for free when the daytime temperature is below freezing, with a wind chill.
LATS also said complete cancellation of service may be possible, depending on weather conditions, and that information will be posted on its Facebook page and its website: ridelats.com. Information also is available calling the LATS office at (580) 248-5252.
Other entities already have made plans to be closed today, including Lawton Public Schools. LPS students will be on virtual day today, as they were Tuesday. The Great Plains Technology Center will also be closed today.
Cache, Elgin, Fletcher and Geronimo school districts will be closed today.
Cameron University’s Duncan and Lawton campuses will also be closed today.
The Center for Creative Living and Lawton Food Bank also announced earlier this week they would be closed Wednesday due to the cold.
Both the City of Lawton and Comanche County closed its non-essential offices Tuesday, and had not said by press time Tuesday whether they would do the same on Wednesday. The Comanche County Courthouse will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m.
In addition, City of Lawton officials have said the restrooms in Elmer Thomas Park, Kids Zone and McMahon Park’s skateboard park would remain closed until temperatures warm above freezing, to protect pipes.
