Volunteers helped create the holiday display honoring deceased veterans. Now, organizers need their help in taking it down.
Organizers of the Wreaths Across America campaign are planning a work day Saturday to remove the Christmas wreaths placed on veteran graves in Fort Sill National Cemetery. Work will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery, located at 2648 NE Jake Dunn Road, Elgin. Organizer Pat Powell said volunteers placed more than 1,300 wreaths during the Dec. 14 work day and help is needed to remove them all.
“All help is welcome,” she said.
Powell said volunteers should dress warmly and bring garden rakes, wagons and gloves for the work. Volunteers should meet at the cemetery’s Section 2.
Powell said farmers who want the wreaths as feed for their goats should bring trucks and trailers to the cemetery, where volunteers will help load them.
Fort Sill National Cemetery is accessible via Interstate 44 at U.S. 62, then traveling north to Glover Road, then east to the cemetery; or from I-44’s Elgin exit, then traveling west on U.S. 277 to Jake Dunn Road, then south to the cemetery.
