Eisenhower High School faces one of its toughest games of the season Friday at Choctaw and while the Eagles will show up ready to play, their hearts will be focused on something far away from the sport of football.
Last Friday the Eagles had senior night and in that game senior cornerback Kobe Devot was making his return to the lineup after missing a couple of games with an injury.
“Kobe was able to play on Senior Night and even got an interception but right now he’s fighting another battle,” Ike Head Coach Javon Harris said.
Saturday night Devot was critically injured when his pickup was involved in an accident. He was transported to the Level I Trauma Center at OU Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
“As of right now they say he is still in critical condition but he is improving,” Ike football coach Javon Harris said. “His mom has been keeping me updated and tomorrow (Thursday) we are going to take a small group of his best friends to see him.
“His family asks that people keep the prayers coming because they feel it is helping.”
Eisenhower High School has started several events to support the family with a “Miracle Minute” for fellow students to donate to the medical care fund and special shirts are being printed and all proceeds will go to the fund.
Lawton’s other two schools have gotten involved and are lending a hand to support their rival in this moment of need.
“We played MacArthur in a junior varsity game this week and both teams got together at midfield and prayed for Kobe,” Harris said. “And, Lawton High sent over a care basket for the family. We have seen great support from our students and team members and their families.”
Harris has the tough job of trying to get the Eagles ready for the challenge against Choctaw, one of the state’s top Class 6AII teams.
“One thing we talk to our kids about is that regardless of what happens, life goes on,” Harris said. “Our players now have something even bigger to play for; one of their teammates in need. We have to battle through this tough time and be positive and stay in there and fight for Kobe.”
