United Way, partnered with the Comanche County Health Department, Lawton Library, and Marie Detty, hosted a parents café event Thursday to help parents in the community find support and resources for their families.
The café was for families to learn about resources through the health department, library, and other organizations in Lawton that give support to both children and adults. The event was also a way for parents to voice their concerns and find support in the community, as well as education about local resources, and parenting advice.
“This is an engaging conversation where we invite families in our community to come and talk about different protective factors like how parents need friends, and we need support. We also need support from our community resources as well,” said Alex Minter, the Success by 6 Director of United Way of Southwest Oklahoma.
The idea was brought on by surveys that were put out by United Way, asking families what resources and support they require the most. According to Minter, Comanche county families are seeking support regarding parenting.
“Our goal with partnering with other people in our community is to bring adults an opportunity to have those conversations and that support, but to also leave our event having hope as they walk into the holidays.”
There will be five parent cafes hosted by United Way in 2025. More information can be found on the United Way website, uwswok.org, and the group’s Facebook page.
