NINNEKAH — Three people died and both lanes of Interstate 44 were closed Thursday following an eight-vehicle wreck, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Trooper Ryan Hayes reported that Phillip V. Stephens, 74, of Lubbock, Texas; Bedford F. Rowland Jr., 77, of Altus; and Marcia O. Rowland, 76, of Lawton; all died at the scene of the wreck that happened shortly before 11:40 a.m. in the interstate’s northeast-bound lanes, one-tenth of a mile west of Ninnekah.

What led up to the wreck, including the condition of all the drivers, remains under investigation.

Stevens was driving a Nissan Altima that crashed. His passenger, Monica S. Stracener, 51, of Lubbock, Texas, was flown to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City and admitted in stable condition with internal trunk injuries.

Bedford Rowland Jr. was driving a Lincoln Nautilus with Marcia Rowland as his passenger, Hayes reported.

Charlotte Bates, 42, of Lawton, was driving a Toyota Sequoia involved in the wreck. She was admitted to Grady County Memorial Hospital in Chickasha in fair condition with arm injuries, the report states.

Nicholas M. Rollins, 44, of Douglass, Kan., was driving a Chevrolet 2500 involved in the wreck. He was treated and released from Grady Memorial, according to Hayes’ report.

A Ford Edge driven by Jeremy D. Brown, 50, of Quanah, Texas, was involved in the wreck. He was treated and released from Comanche County Memorial Hospital. His passenger, Felicia A. Brown, 30, also of Quanah, Texas, was admitted to OU Medical in stable condition with trunk injuries, the report states. A 2-year-old boy passenger was not injured.

Melissa Hunt, 43, of Lawton, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe involved in the crash. She was treated and released from Grady Memorial. Her passengers, an 8-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were not injured, according to the report.

Not injured were Jose I. Jimenez, 27, of El Paso, Texas, who was driving a Dodge Ram; Kevin Vo, 19, of Lawton, was driving a Mercedes and was not injured nor was his passenger, Easton N. Cox, 24, of Cache; and Arthur C. Nunley Jr. 47, of Elgin, who was driving a Peterbilt tractor-trailer, Hayes reported.

Both directions of travel were blocked between mile markers 76 and 81 for just under six hours, according to the report.
