DUNCAN — Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney announced Wednesday that after his fourth term as the county’s top cop, he’s retiring on Feb. 2, 2024.
In a statement, McKinney said the day has come for him and his wife, Julie, to move on in their lives. He called it “a great honor and privilege” to have served 16 years as the sheriff.
“The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office is highly professional and it has been an honor to serve with, and lead the most courageous men and women that I have ever known,” he said. “We have done our duty, as we have seen it, with integrity, honor and excellence, for that I’m very proud of what has been accomplished by these loyal and professional individuals.”
McKinney has over 30 years of law enforcement experience having served as a deputy sheriff, police officer, detective, state trooper, and investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration before leading the Stephens County department. It’s been leading his office that he has found a source of pride.
“I can honestly and truthfully say that I worked myself tirelessly to make Stephens County safer, and that I am very pleased,” he said. “We have had many victories but few defeats.”
McKinney has offered his full endorsement to Undersheriff Rick Lang to serve in his wake as Stephens County Sheriff.
