More winter weather is expected this evening that could make for a slippery commute Monday morning.
The National Weather Service forecasts light precipitation across Comanche County to start around sunset. It is expected a quick transition from rain to freezing rain as surface temperatures drop below freezing. At least a minor impact is expected to hinder travel and there is the potential for quick onset of slick road conditions.
Comanche County – Lawton Emergency Management offers winter safety tips: reduce your speed and give yourself more time to arrive where you’re going; stay in your lane; speed up and slow down slowly and increase following distances; double-check the temperature; stay alert on bridges; drive while it’s light out; don’t use cruise control; and when possible, stay home.
If you begin to skid, steer into it. That means taking your foot off the gas and turn your steering wheel in the same direction the back of your vehicle is sliding.
One-tenth to a quarter-inch of accumulation is expected with a glaze of ice possible, according to the National Weather Service. However, due to low winds, it’s not expected to cause many issues with power lines. You are recommended to keep faucets streaming and cabinets open to avoid frozen pipes.
With nighttime temperatures dropping anywhere between sub-10 degrees to the teens this past week, there’s a high- probability things will slick up swiftly and drivers are warned of potentially slick roadways Monday morning. However, by early afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise above freezing rapidly and any lingering rain should stay liquid. By nightfall, however, roadways can become slick in spots and drivers are warned to be wary of black ice.
In Lawton, the temperature is expected to peak at 54 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday with lows in the 30s, according to the National Weather Service.
