Lawton Police Special Operations Unit detectives said they took over 12 pounds of methamphetamine off the streets with a pair of separate arrests this week.

First bust

In the first case, detectives had information from a cooperating individual who said David Shaun Caton had a large amount of meth for sale. The person reached out to Caton, who lives in Duncan, and a deal was made to buy 4 kilos of meth for $17,500 in the parking lot of Homeland at Southeast 45th Street and Lee Boulevard, the probable cause affidavit states. He told detectives when he’d last met Caton, he was driving a white truck-style Jeep.

The Jeep arrived and messaged to meet across the street at the Pizza Hut shortly after 8 p.m. Monday. A felony traffic stop was conducted and a blue bag was seen inside. A K-9 officer conducted an open-air sniff and alerted positive for drugs, the affidavit states.

Inside the blue bag were four large clear bags containing meth and in an insulated cooler bag was another clear bag of meth as well as a firearm, police said. Drug paraphernalia was recovered as well.

Detectives weighed the drugs and found they contained 10.05 pounds of meth, according to the affidavit.

On Friday, Caton made his initial appearance in Comanche County District Court where he was charged with felony counts of aggravated drug trafficking, unlawful use of a communication facility and possession of a firearm after former felony conviction as well as a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia, records indicate.

Caton has prior felony convictions: Stephens County, January 2017, possession of a stolen vehicle; and McClain County, August 2017, driving under the influence, possession of a stolen vehicle and second-degree burglary.

Caton is being held on $250,000 bond. He returns to court at 3 p.m. Jan. 9, 2024, for his preliminary hearing conference, records indicate.

Second bust

Detectives received information Wednesday that a large amount of meth was coming into Lawton in a tan pickup coming in from Oklahoma City. Police set up along Interstate 44 and saw the truck come into town for a meeting at Motel 6, 202 E. Lee, the affidavit states. An improperly mounted truck tag and too dark window tint offered police opportunity to conduct a traffic stop on East Lee Boulevard.

The driver, Joshua Hutchinson, was “extremely nervous and was visibly shaking,” the affidavit states. A K-9 officer arrived and conducted an open-air sniff.

Hutchinson became agitated when the dog alerted to drugs in the truck, according to police. During a search of the truck, a black plastic bag containing 2.25 pounds of meth was recovered and Hutchinson was arrested.

Hutchinson made his initial court appearance Friday where he received a felony charge of aggravated drug trafficking and a misdemeanor charge of excessive window tint.

Held on $75,000 bond, Hutchinson returns to court at 3 p.m. Jan. 9, 2024, for his preliminary hearing conference.
