Races have developed for Lawton mayor, Lawton Ward 2 City Council representative and District 1 Comanche County Commissioner, after the first day of filings.
Residents interested in those offices, as well as the Lawton City Council Ward 1, have until 5 p.m. Wednesday to file their declarations of candidacy with the Comanche County Election Board, located in the Comanche County Courthouse at Southwest 5th Street and Southwest C Avenue.
In Lawton, Mayor Stan Booker filed his intent to seek a third term. Also filing for the mayoral seat was Cindy Edgar, who ran for the Ward 7 City Council seat in 2023.
In Ward 2, candidates who filed Monday were R.L. Smith and Justin L. Harrill. No candidates had filed for Ward 1 as of 5 p.m. Ward 1 Councilwoman Mary Ann Hankins and Ward 2 Councilman Kelly Harris have said they will not seek re-election.
In Comanche County, Trent Logan — appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt to fill the seat until an election is held — filed for the office. So did three other challengers: Ryan John, Kevin C. Turpin and Hank Hasenbeck. The winner of this election will complete the unexpired term of former District 1 Commissioner John O’Brien, who resigned from office earlier this month as part of a plea agreement for entering no contest pleas to two amended misdemeanor counts of embezzlement. Logan will fill the role as commissioner until District 1 voters select their candidate.
The primary election for all four races is Aug. 27.
To serve as Lawton mayor, candidates must be registered voters at an address within Lawton for at least six months prior to filing for election. City Council candidates must be registered voters at an address within the ward they seek to represent for at least six months prior to filing. The District 1 commissioner (eastern Comanche County) is open to registered voters who have maintained a current principal residence within the eastern district for at least six months prior to filing. Commissioner candidates also must be registered voters of the political party they seek to represent at least six months prior to the first day of candidate filing.
There is no filing fee for City Council and mayoral candidates. There is a $300 filing fee for county commissioner candidates.
