There were 45 bowlers in the lineup for the first of a series of Po-Boy tournaments scheduled for Monday evenings at Thunderbird Lanes throughout the summer months.
The event got off to a slow start as tournament officials learn the administrative part of running a tournament in the new scoring system, but once the bowling started, the strikes were plentiful and the first two games of qualifying went by quickly.
The high scratch scores for game one of qualifying was a 257 by Steve O’Harris (WF), followed by Shawn Thomas with a 246
Game two scratch game winners were Matt Ray, 258 and Kellan Hill, 256.
The format allowed for the top 16 bowlers to advance to the single elimination bracket.
Qualifiers included the top seed Andrew Petering with a 489 two game handicap set, followed by John Fortner, 485, DJ Pyfer, 481, Robert Vitense, 476, Shawn Thomas, 470, Matt Ray, 464, Craig Foster, 461, Kellan Hill, 458, Derek Bennett, 452, Payne Jolly, 446, Steve O’Harris, 445, Dennis Jolly, 440, Kadeem Smith, 438, Gio Gordon, 432 and Camden Sublett, along with Sam Bowman, tied with 430 to fill the final two spots.
Bowlers were paired high vs. low for the round of 16 where Petering beat Bowman, 211-201, Hill beat Bennett, 224-212, and Thomas beat D. Jolly, 235-200, Foster beat P. Jolly, 215-194 and Fort-ner beat Sublett, 209-197.
Petering continued on his mission with a win over Hill in the round of eight, 233-203 and Smith won over Thomas, 252-223.
Pyfer caught a break scoring 265 to O’Harris’ 193 and Fortner got the win against Foster in the final pairing 212-161.
Smith put a 252 together showing no mercy on Petering who registered a 170, to advance to the finals to face Pyfer who won over Fortner, 225-212.
DJ Pyfer found new light and better carry, taking the title with a 262 score to Smith’s 232 effort.
This event also features ticket challenges where in the first week, Sam Bowman won ticket one.
DJ Pyfer needed a strike to win ticket two and Tony Faustner needed a double to win ticket three.
Neither ticket was hit and started with a $58 carryover in last night’s competition.
Tune in next week for those results.
